Quick Answer
Increasingly yes, though it's often framed as a question about recovery times rather than a named plan. Backups alone don't answer it. Insurers want to know how long you'd actually be down and whether you've tested that figure.
Backups Aren't the Same Answer
Plenty of businesses answer the backup questions confidently and then can't say how long a full restore would take, who would perform it, or which systems come back first. That's the gap.
Backups are the data. Recovery is the plan for turning that data back into a working business, and insurers assess them as separate things.
What Underwriters Ask
Whether a documented recovery plan exists, and when it was last updated
Your recovery time objectives for critical systems
Whether recovery has been tested, and the date of the last test
Who is responsible for recovery, including any third parties
Whether you've measured actual recovery time against your target
The Question Is How Long, Not Whether
"We have backups and a plan" is a weaker answer than "critical systems restore in six hours, last tested in March." Business interruption is the largest component of most ransomware claims, so recovery speed is what an underwriter is actually pricing.
If you haven't measured it, you don't know it — and estimates are usually optimistic.
Untested Plans Count for Little
A plan written once and filed carries limited weight. Insurers ask for the date of the last exercise for the same reason they ask about restore testing: it's the difference between a document and a capability.
Example Scenario
A 220-person manufacturer was asked at renewal how quickly it could recover production systems after ransomware. Backups were reliable, but recovery procedures had never been documented and restoration time had never been measured. PureStack built the plan, set recovery objectives, and ran recovery testing before the application was submitted.
How PureStack Evidences Your Recovery Capability
We document recovery procedures, set realistic objectives, run the tests, and produce dated evidence of what your actual recovery time is.
