Quick Answer

The plan for getting your systems running again after they go down. Not the backup itself — the documented process of restoring what, in what order, by whom, and how fast.

Backups Are Not a Recovery Plan

Most businesses have backups and assume that's disaster recovery. It isn't.

Backups are the data. Disaster recovery is everything you need around them: which systems come back first, who performs the restore, where the procedures are written down, and how long the whole thing takes. Without that, a business with perfectly good backups still spends days working out what to do while nobody can operate.

What a Plan Contains

Priority order — which systems come back first. When everything is down, you can't restore everything at once, and that decision shouldn't be made under pressure.

Recovery targets — an RTO for how long each system can be down, and an RPO for how much data you can afford to lose.

Written procedures — step by step, detailed enough that someone other than the author can follow them.

Named roles — who coordinates, who restores, who communicates with staff and customers. Names, not job titles.

Dependencies — the things a system needs before it will actually run: licence keys, configurations, other systems it depends on. These are the usual reason a restore stalls.

Testing — the plan is a theory until someone has restored something and timed it.

Where It Sits

Disaster recovery restores the technology. Business continuity keeps the business operating while that happens. You need both, and they're different plans.

Example Scenario

A 200-person engineering firm hit by ransomware had several production servers encrypted. Because a documented recovery plan existed, the IT team activated it immediately, restored clean backups, and brought critical applications back in priority order — resuming operations far faster than expected.

How PureStack Builds Your Recovery Plan

We identify which systems you can't operate without, set realistic recovery targets, document the procedures, and test them so the plan holds when it's needed.
