What Is Patch Management?

Quick Answer

The process of keeping every system updated, not just the ones that update themselves. A patch is a vendor fix for a vulnerability; patch management is knowing what's missing across your whole environment and getting it applied.

Automatic Updates Aren't Patch Management

Windows Update handles Windows. It does nothing for your firewall firmware, your line-of-business application, your network switches, or the PDF reader on every desktop.

Most businesses with a patching problem don't have unpatched Windows machines. They have everything else — which is where attackers increasingly look, because internet-facing devices like VPN appliances and firewalls are both reachable and frequently forgotten.

What Needs Covering

  • Operating systems — Windows, macOS, Linux, mobile

  • Business applications — Office, accounting, ERP, CRM, line-of-business software

  • Servers — physical, virtual, and cloud workloads

  • Network devices — firewalls, routers, switches, VPN appliances, access points

  • Third-party software — browsers, PDF readers, collaboration tools

Prioritise internet-facing systems first. A vulnerability someone can reach from outside is a different problem from one on an internal laptop.

You Need a Number, Not a Process

The point of a programme is visibility: what percentage of your estate is current, what's outstanding, and how long it took. Without central reporting you're relying on each system to update itself and assuming it did.

This also matters commercially — underwriters increasingly ask for patching timeframes and compliance rates, not whether you patch.

The Systems You Can't Patch

Every environment has a few: software the vendor no longer supports, or equipment that breaks if updated. Those need isolating rather than ignoring, and they should be on a documented exception list with a replacement plan.

Example Scenario

A 150-person logistics company was asked during a renewal assessment how it identified and deployed critical updates. Windows updates were enabled, but many third-party applications and network devices hadn't been updated in months. PureStack introduced a structured programme with schedules, prioritisation, and central compliance reporting.

How PureStack Manages Your Patching

We inventory what's actually running, identify what's missing across all of it, prioritise by exposure, and report compliance so you know your position rather than assuming it.
