What Is SIEM?

Quick Answer

A platform that pulls security logs from across your systems into one place and looks for patterns across them. Its value is correlation — spotting the sequence that individual systems each see only a fragment of.

Why Correlation Matters

A failed sign-in means nothing. A failed sign-in isn't interesting, a successful one from an unfamiliar country isn't conclusive, and a new mailbox forwarding rule could be legitimate. All three within ten minutes is an account takeover.

No single system sees that sequence — your identity platform holds the sign-ins, your email platform holds the rule. A SIEM sees both and joins them up.

What It Does

Collects logs from servers, endpoints, firewalls, cloud platforms, and security tools. Correlates events across those sources against known attack patterns. Generates alerts when something matches. And retains the data so you can investigate afterwards or produce it for an auditor.

A SIEM Doesn't Respond

This is what businesses underestimate. A SIEM produces alerts — it doesn't decide which are real, and it doesn't act. Most generate a lot of them, and the majority are benign.

Bought without anyone to triage the output, a SIEM becomes an expensive notification system. It's why SIEM is nearly always paired with monitoring rather than deployed alone.

Tuning Is the Ongoing Work

Out of the box, a SIEM flags too much. Reducing false positives without suppressing real detections takes continuous adjustment as your environment changes. Budget for that, not just the license.

Example Scenario

A 200-person financial services firm wanted better visibility across a growing environment. PureStack implemented a SIEM collecting logs from Microsoft 365, firewalls, servers, endpoint protection, and cloud applications. Weeks later it correlated repeated failed sign-ins with a success from an unusual location, triggering an alert that let the account be contained before other systems were affected.

How PureStack Makes Your SIEM Useful

We integrate the right log sources, configure detection rules for your environment, tune out the noise, and monitor what's left — so the alerts you get are ones worth acting on.
